The Vandalia State Capitol building is one of the more problematic buildings I have visited. Yes, it was indeed the capitol building for a few years, but it was not the first on the site, but the fourth. The building you see here was built by the residents of Vandalia in a failed attempt to keep the capital from moving to Springfield. And also, the building didn’t even look like the building today. It was turned into the courthouse and was renovated in more of a Greek Revival/Georgian style. When it was renovated, they decided to not return it back to the big red brick box it was when Abraham Lincoln walked its halls for a brief time.
